Completed Projects

1996 "City - the Mirror of Our Culture of Environmental Protection," - funded by the Civil Society Development Foundation.
The objective: to promote favourable conditions to launch a new civil initiative for environmentally friendly and economic effective system of collecting recyclable household waste, and to raise the environmental awareness of the citizens of Stara Zagora. A professional survey was conducted to assess the public readiness for separate collection of the recyclable household wastes; meetings and discussions were organised with the authorised representatives of the local authorities, businessmen, environmentalists and journalists to identify and promote opportunities for further partnerships.

1997 BOOK was the co-ordinator of the humanitarian initiative of the Danish Government, supported by UNDP, and helped distribute a grant of $10,000 among 500 children of poor families in Stara Zagora. This was the first attempt by a local NGO to establish general criteria and procedures to implement this type of program.

1997 "National Project on Design of Municipal Regulations, as It Is Stated in the Local Government Administration Act," - funded by the Democracy Network Program.
As a result of this project, 7 draft regulations had been designed on the basis of practical experience of 27 municipalities throughout Bulgaria. These reports were published and disseminated back to all these Municipal Administrations and Councils who stated their interest in the project. A workshop with representatives of NGO and the Municipal Council of Stara Zagora was organised and conducted.

1997 "The Citizen - an Active Party of Local Legislation," - funded by the Democracy Network Program.
A survey of public opinion and needs was conducted. Twelve TV programs were shown on local television. Two brochures providing information on the responsibilities and services of the local authority and the local regulations of the Municipality of Stara Zagora were published and distributed to local citizens.

1998 "With Some Help Granted by Friends," - funded by the Civil Society Development Foundation.
As a result of the project a new ‘labour scheme’ of part-time jobs for high school students coming from disadvantaged families who have excellent academic records was established. A specific role of the BOOK was to act as mediator between the target group and the employers to advocate and guarantee the interests of the students and the ensure compliance with labour legislation requirements.

1998 Journalist Awards, Stara Zagora 98.
BOOK provided a donation to support the initiative of local press media, businesses and other community organisations to recognise outstanding journalistic achievement.

1998 Children Draw on the Asphalt,
a celebration of the Children’s Day (June 1). BOOK organised and supported the celebration of the Children’s Day in two Day Care Centres in Stara Zagora. It granted toys and sports ware to needy children.

1999 Bulgarian - Romani Forum "Coexistence" - financially supported by Embassy of the United States, Sofia, Bulgaria, Democracy Commission Small Grants
The objective of the project is to improve the understanding and communication between Bulgarian and Romani ethnic groups by encouraging ethnic tolerance, integration of Romani minority, revealing cultural values, facilitating conflict resolution. The project provides research, analysis of problems and policies, initiates discussions to identify models of coexistence and socialization of the Romani ethnic group, specific approaches to improving the education of children of the Romani minority. A broad aspect of activities are incorporated: meetings with Romani NGOs, local authorities and governmental institutions, inquiry of citizens of neighborhoods with mixed Bulgarian- Romani population, children competitions for assays (April 8 - International Romani Day; I and My School), TV emissions, à workshop.

1999 Environmentally Friendly Agriculture and Clean Air - financially supported by the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe
The Municipality of Stara Zagora is situated in the agricultural heartland of Bulgaria. The project aims to support the local authorities of Stara Zagora and the mayors of the nearby villages to intensify the education of farmers on environmentally friendly agricultural practices. The activities emphasize on the broadly spread practice of stubble-burning and its harmful effects on soil fertility and air pollution. The project includes inquiry, research, a workshop, design and dissemination of information materials.

1999 Civil Participation Fund - initiated by NGO "Bulgarian Society for Education and Culture" (BOOK)
The objective of this innovative practice is to launch active fundraising. The fund will support financially NGO and civil initiatives and activities for the welfare of the Municipality of Stara Zagora. The local authority of Stara Zagora provides 50 million Bulgarian leva from its Budget ’99 to support the fund. BOOK takes the responsibility to attract at least 50 million Bulgarian leva more from other donors. BOOK involves recognized citizens of Stara Zagora and NGO experts in its direct management, ensuring broad access to the services provided and total transparency of the operation of the fund.
